Chapter 1Pitter-pat

A painted kingdom of sweets: gingerbread houses, a castle with striped towers and giant swirly lollipops.

Kai walked into the Candy Kingdom. The houses were made of gingerbread!

Up in the sky was a fat pink cloud. Pitter-pat, pitter-pat. It began to rain.

But it did not rain water. It rained jelly beans! Red ones, green ones and blue ones.

Soon there were jelly beans on the roofs. There were jelly beans in the street. There were jelly beans in the Candy Queen’s crown!

“Oh dear,” said the queen. “What a sticky muddle. Can you help?”

What happens next is up to your child

What should Kai do with the jelly beans?

Questions for grown-ups to ask

Did you spot it?

  1. EasyWhat did the pink cloud rain?Answer: Jelly beans.
  2. MediumWhere did the jelly beans land?Answer: On the roofs, in the street and in the queen’s crown.
  3. HarderWhich idea was more useful, the hat or the path? Why?Answer: Any answer with a reason: the hat saved the sweets to share; the path made the street tidy and pretty.

Talk about it

  • If a cloud could rain anything, what would you want it to rain?
  • The rainbow path goes red, green, blue. Can you make a pattern with three colours?

Words to talk about

gingerbread
A cake or biscuit with a warm, spicy taste.
muddle
A big mess, when things are mixed up.
rainbow
Bands of colours across the sky after rain.

Reading it together

The Jelly Bean Rain is a silly, happy story for beginning readers, written at Litsee’s reading level for age 5. The repeated sounds (pitter-pat, plip, plop) and the colour pattern give children words they can read on their own.

Before the choice, ask your child what they would do if sweets fell from the sky. Then read the two options. There is no right answer: one ending saves the sweets to share, the other turns the mess into something beautiful.

The rainbow path is a ready-made maths game. Make the pattern with real objects, buttons or crayons, and let your child carry it on.

Questions parents and teachers ask

Does The Jelly Bean Rain encourage eating lots of sweets?

No. It is a fantasy about a magical kingdom, and the ending is about sharing or making something beautiful, not eating.

What age is it for?

Ages 5 and 6, at Litsee’s reading level for age 5. Older children enjoy it as a quick, funny read aloud to a younger brother or sister.

Can my child choose who the story is about?

Yes. Kai leads The Jelly Bean Rain unless your child picks another of the 15 heroes above it. That hero’s name then fills every page, and “Put them in the pictures” paints them into the Candy Kingdom. Nothing is typed, saved or sent.

Now let your child make a story of their own.

In Litsee, your child creates the hero, picks the world and chooses what happens next in an illustrated story that is read aloud.
